Bill 185 Cutting Red Tape

BILL 185 CUTTING RED TAPE

Hello from Kelly at Think Turtle Conservation Initiative

In case you missed it, yesterday, April 10, the Ontario government introduced Bill 185 (Cutting Red Tape to Build More Homes Act, 2024) to the Ontario legislature as part of its ongoing commitment to cut red tape as defined by the Ministry of Red Tape Reduction.

Bill 185 would incite troubling changes province-wide to planning processes and appeals and embark on a more strategic plan to open up farmland, wetlands, and wildlife habitats to destruction for new development while shunning options such as low-density sprawl. No one is disputing that housing is needed, but the correct type of affordable housing includes low-density dwellings built on land already designated for development. Bill 185 would allow land speculators to demand at any time that wildlife habitat, farmland, and wetlands be allocated for sprawl development.

The proposed changes in Bill 185 seem to prioritize developers’ profit over the crucial task of providing sustainable and affordable housing, creating an imbalance that threatens the well-being of our communities and environment.
