South Baptiste Lake Road Improvements

SOUTH BAPTISTE LAKE ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

Hello from Kelly at Think Turtle Conservation Initiative

We shared a post recently about the reconstruction and resurfacing of 13.4 kilometers of South Baptiste Lake Road, from “Y” Road to Clarke Road as part of the Capital Road Project April 1st to August 31st.

The Turtles

Please know that we met with the Hasting Highlands Operations Supervisor a few weeks back to discuss possible turtle activity along the stretch of road referenced in the coming weeks and months and the various scenarios they could face while working in areas that experience turtle activity. Through collaborative efforts, we are staying in touch with the Operations Department to monitor turtle activity and have contingency plans in place should any unforeseen circumstances arise.

For several years, we have been working with Hastings Highlands Management and the Roads Crew on turtle conservation efforts. We deeply appreciate their support and assistance. The road works are a vital part of our collective efforts to upgrade and maintain the area. The project is currently scheduled to run through July, and we will keep you updated as the work progresses and a completion date is determined.

Your active role in our turtle conservation efforts, whether it’s through your questions, concerns, or reports, is invaluable. You are the backbone of our project, and your involvement is crucial in helping us protect these vulnerable creatures. Similarly, your inquiries about the ongoing works or related matters are important to the municipality. We encourage you to submit a customer service request through the Municipality of Hastings Highlands website if you have questions or concerns.

Speeding

As always, we ask that anyone traveling along South Baptiste Lake Road this time of year be alert to increased turtle activity. Turtle season has begun, and we expect to see turtles crossing roads from April to October. The Think Turtle Team, having spent considerable time on South Baptiste Lake Road, has observed an alarming amount of speeding and road mortality incidents that include turtles, mink, foxes, snakes, and frogs. We urge all motorists to slow down and be mindful of the wildlife we share the roads with. Let’s all do our best to make the roads safer for wildlife, pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists. Remember, our actions on the road can make a significant difference in preserving our wildlife.

Respectfully,
Kelly Wallace, Managing Director
