Help Turtles In Belleville

Hello from Kelly at Think Turtle Conservation Initiative

We are looking for volunteers to help turtles in the Belleville area!

Years ago there would have been plenty of suitable habitat available to the turtles where the Belleville business district is now situated. As a result of development and alternate land use over the years, this has reduced and fragmented the habitat the turtles have to carry out their routine activities. Some turtles have moved on to other areas but with turtles having a strong affinity for their home range and nesting sites typically being where they were born and where their mother was born and so on and so on there are still turtles that exit the Moira River every year to nest where their ancestors did. They are faced with less-than-ideal nesting sites because that is all that is available. This includes narrow strips of substrate in parking lots and such.

If you live, work, or routinely travel through Belleville and can volunteer some time in the coming weeks mid-May through to mid-July to help monitor turtle activity this would be time well spent. The amount of time you spend helping is up to you.

These efforts are important to protect and conserve the turtle species native to Ontario that are located in Belleville.

If you are interested in helping please contact Think Turtle Conservation Initiative at 647-606-9537 or thinkturtle@yahoo.com. Should you not be able to volunteer but know someone in the Belleville area that may be able to help it would be greatly appreciated if you shared this information with them. Thank you!

We look forward to hearing from you. Wishing you a good day, take care, and be safe.

Appreciatively,
Kelly Wallace, Managing Director
